End-to-end tracking is helping airports and airlines to reduce the cost of\u00a0mishandled bags and to increase passenger satisfaction<\/h2>\n

One of the key trends for\u00a02016 is to look at solutions\u00a0that cover the end-to-end journey\u00a0of a bag and how to make that\u00a0journey more efficient and easier to\u00a0administer. The convergence of\u00a0technologies has seen the multiple\u00a0systems used in the day-to-day\u00a0operation of baggage handling\u00a0move to a single data source\u00a0baggage management solution.<\/p>\n

We have seen this in the shift to standard technologies for baggage\u00a0messaging, the adoption of\u00a0permanent bag tags, and the\u00a0ability to integrate with sortation\u00a0and x-ray scanners.\u00a0Despite concerted efforts by\u00a0IATA and its member airlines,\u00a0mishandled bags are still costing\u00a0the aviation industry in excess of\u00a0US$2.6bn every year. In addition,\u00a0in June 2018, IATA\u2019s Resolution\u00a0753, aimed at reducing the\u00a0mishandled bag count even\u00a0further, will become mandatory.\u00a0Are we, as an industry, ready to\u00a0consolidate and embrace these\u00a0changes to gain real operational\u00a0and performance benefits?<\/p>\n

Software solution<\/strong><\/p>\n

As well as satisfying obligations\u00a0under Resolution 753, the global\u00a0community (including airports,\u00a0airlines and ground handlers)\u00a0is now looking to IT software\u00a0innovators to deliver end-to-end\u00a0baggage management solutions,\u00a0providing detailed baggage\u00a0inventories with the ability to\u00a0monitor, review and improve their\u00a0operations, as well as enhance the\u00a0overall passenger experience.<\/p>\n

Once the end-to-end process\u00a0is established, and there is wider\u00a0deployment of mobile devices\u00a0for passenger use on flight, the\u00a0demand to provide up-to-the minute\u00a0baggage information,\u00a0including alert triggers, carousel\u00a0information, bag release\u00a0information and the improved\u00a0customer service experience for\u00a0mishandled and repatriated bags,\u00a0will inevitably increase.<\/p>\n

Early departures<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong>Another innovative application\u00a0that is set to take flight in 2016,\u00a0FirstBag<\/a>\u00a0is a bag management and\u00a0reconciliation application that\u00a0can help to meet the needs of\u00a0IATA\u2019s Resolution 753\u00a0focuses on the \u2018mobilization\u00a0of load control\u2019. Developed in\u00a0partnership with Qantas and its IT\u00a0solutions partner Zafire Aviation,\u00a0this pioneering application is\u00a0now being used in Qantas\u2019s live\u00a0environment and has improved the\u00a0loading operation of an aircraft at\u00a0the airport ramp.\u00a0With real-time updates sent\u00a0directly to the load manager\u00a0and instant access to the latest\u00a0information at all times \u2013 using a\u00a0pictorial view of the load area \u2013 the\u00a0manager simply clicks a button\u00a0to clear the flight.<\/p>\n

The saving on\u00a0clearance time and accuracy of\u00a0information is substantial, taking\u00a0valuable minutes off the flight\u00a0readiness time.\u00a0This all happens using an\u00a0Android or iOS device and invites\u00a0the ramp manager to sign off the\u00a0loading process electronically,\u00a0making certain the final load is\u00a0signed off safely and enabling the\u00a0aircraft to leave on time \u2013 or earlier.\u00a0Qantas\u2019s goal was to guarantee\u00a0the timely departure of the aircraft,\u00a0but early indications suggest that\u00a0the cargo doors are now closed\u00a0much earlier than before, ensuring\u00a0on-time or early departures that\u00a0benefit everyone.<\/p>\n

The application\u2019s simplicity\u00a0and effectiveness has had such\u00a0a positive impact on operational\u00a0performance that the solution is\u00a0currently being rolled out across\u00a0Qantas\u2019s global network.<\/p>\n
